What is Sport and Performance Psychology?
How It Can Make An IMPACT On Your Performance
Purpose of SPP
The purpose of Sport and Performance Psychology is to help guide individuals to perform at their most optimal level. This is done by utilizing principles of psychology and implementing them in habits and techniques that individuals can use at any time. Sport and Performance Psychology can be used to address topics such as, but not limited to:
What SPP is NOT
While Sport and Performance Psychology is a useful tool for improving performance, it is not a “magic pill” that will automatically make you a better performer. Think of it this way: One trip to the gym does not make you immediately stronger; it takes consistent practice and effort to see results. It is the same thing with mental performance. The mental skills provided through mental performance coaching are expected to be practiced before, during, and after a performance.
Along with this, Sport and Performance Psychology is not therapy. It is very common for people to believe that someone who sees a mental performance coach has a “problem”, but this is far from the truth. If an individual works out to get physically stronger, they aren’t seen as someone who has a problem; they are seen as someone looking to better themselves. In the same way, someone who is using mental performance techniques is simply bettering themselves mentally.
Finally, as a mental performance coach, my job is not to boss you around. In fact, I work for you! The reason for this is because no one knows what is best for you except for YOU! My role is to get to know you as an individual and then use my knowledge of SPP to help design skills and techniques that are best suited for your performance style. Because of this, it is my goal to get to know the performer, not the challenge!
Who SPP is For
Even though the profession is called sport and performance psychology, the main focus is on performance. This is because EVERYONE is a performer in some way. Whether it is an athlete, speaker, musician, or first responder, the skills learned through mental performance coaching can be applied in any profession. Essentially, if you are looking to improve your performance, SPP is for YOU!
